I thank the great goodness for a master, the first one who did a retreat at my farm, Karigan Kanesh. He was a Russian Doctor turned spiritual teacher traveling the world. He had a translator for he spoke in Russian but he could understand English and chat in it. He stayed in my daughters room while he was here and was a brilliant, interesting character.
He taught of our body, nutrition, cleansing our system through a fast called prackshanalona, and took us to a Russian Banyan or bath house. In Russia, where he was from, the Northern Gate of the Himalayas, they have these in their yards and use the snow as the cold release. The banyan he took us too, is filled with Russians who go there biweekly or monthly to do the regimen as part of their health. They are beautiful people and one of the reasons is because of this health practice they do and on weekends you see whole families with kids enjoying this practice.
He took us through all the rooms, a Turkish dry heat room, a Russian dry heat room, the steam room and a sauna which we are familiar. As we went through the rooms, which are up to 120 degrees, he would explain the practice as you sit and sweat or detox as long as you can manage, then you go under a cold shower release or into a freezing pool. The heat releases toxins from our organs through our blood and relaxes our muscles, mind and body so deeply that your mind goes blank, almost catatonic. Then the cold water shower spritz puts the blood refreshed back into your organs renewed.
It is the most relaxing, oxytocin producing practice I know. You usually go through two rooms, two showers and then you must sit down and relax. You are so chill and relaxed, your body exuding oxytocin and the rejuvenation system, rebuild system kicks in and you are in such peace. It is like nothing I have ever done.
Your usually there about 3 hours, maybe 6 cycles of this. We use the steam room throughout which is moist heat. There we do a salt scrub, use essential oils to get deeply into our systems and end with honey on our skin. It is so magical the way your skin and body feels. It is like a cleaning on the inside and the outside. The Russians can stay in the heat and at the higher temperatures so much longer than we can for they are used to doing this as a health practice.
Today I went and have not been there since last winter. I honestly forgot after doing this winter after winter of the incredible healing it offers. You spend that 3 hours in oxytocin as you do it, your mind empty, in the most peaceful state. Then when you leave you are chilled but alert, reminds me of Tai Chi energy. Your mind stays quiet and you glide onward in a peaceful, chill state and nothing knocks you out. It is evening and I am still in this oxytocin state. So you get a detox, rejuvenation like no other practice I know and for hours beyond.
My body has no aches or pains, my muscles and movement fluid, my heart light and joyful. It is so magical. I am so thankful for all his learning and this practice so valuable to my health. This detox really revitalizes your skin for you are flushing out through sweat and kidney function which so healthy for the skin, our largest organ. I can't say enough how healthful and healing this practice is.
The Russians hang out and eat healthfully afterward and even often are drinking beer and vodka which seems so funny. I learned this from a spiritual man so we didn't partake but have gone there with birthday celebrations where we had champagne and eats after the cycles. You are very hungry when you are done and they offer good soups, salads, tea and fine healthy eating. It is truly a social affair for them.
I know many other cultures practice this bath house practice in many forms. We are made of atleast 70% water so you can see how using this steam, heat, pools, sweat lodges, all this is so healthful. When I was in Colorado we went to natural mineral hot springs which is a similar practice, even jacuzzi's fit this fare. It is a wise choice to cleanse your body from the inside out. This an easy way, no effort, full on relaxation, oxytocin buzz that keeps going.
I had to share this ancient, healing practice that has been used for youthful glow and healing for centuries. I highly recommend it. Once you do it, you will be hooked. It is deliciously pleasurable!
