As we approach the holidays, instead of the usual intensity and craziness, try to be proactive. Think of the things you usually get stressed over and have a plan! Part of being stress free is knowing what stresses you and coming up with ideas on how to prevent it or notice it and shift. Prevention seems to be the greatest tool and then shifting techniques when you are stressed seems to be the second most valuable skill.
My three basic ways to switch it up are breathing deep, movement and sound. I know you have most likely heard them before but maybe this year you will try one of them and find it valuable. Breathing is such a simple way to change your biochemical stress that it seems crazy that we don't use this more often. More oxygen, calmer body, clearer head. Movement is doing something that takes you out of your mind and the yipping in your head. To dance, to do jumping jacks, to go do something physical you like at a moment of stress is another way to shift you physiological state. That is why we work out, we oxygenate in doing so and that allows your body to get out of adrenaline and into relaxation. It only has to be for a few minutes, not a full workout just some shifting movement. Sound is one we often use and don't realize it. Put on some music that promotes a feeling different than stress, happy tunes, a song you love, a healing beat. Easy quick ways to destress immediately!
